Meet Combat Corner Rep Team member Joe Zakriski as he sits down and answers some of our questions. Zakriski has been a Rep Team member for a while now, and has continued to do great things with himself and his Academy!
Who are you, and where are you from?
My name is Joe Zakriski and I am from Scotia, New York.

How long have you been training, and where do you train out of?
I have been training in various martial arts throughout my life, but my most prominent training right now is in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at Atlas Jiu Jitsu in Albany, Glens Falls, and Hudson, NY where I train underneath black belt Edward Anthony and in Judo at the Jason Morris Judo Center.

Do you have a nickname if so, what is the story behind it?
My nickname is Josferatu, like the original Dracula from the 1922 silent film ‘Nosferatu’. Back in the day, I used to shave my head bald and I’ve been blessed with gigantic ears. So, whenever I would have a tight hold on a training partner’s back, my coach would tell me that I looked like Nosferatu. Then, one day after my instructor called me that, there was a brief silence before one of my training partners said, “Josferatu”… From that day forward I have been Josferatu.

What is your current record/BJJ tournament results?
The best I can give you is that I have won a bunch and I have learned a bunch. I don’t take competition super seriously. It takes the fun out of the art. You have people who go into tournaments and all they want to do is win and if they don’t, they disappear from training because they go into depression, or worse, quit. I’m not going into tournaments thinking, I want that medal, I want that belt, I want to destroy my opponents. I go into my tournaments just like I go into my training sessions, wanting to be better than the day before.

Do you have an upcoming fight/tournament/debut?
I am actually taking time off from competition at the moment to work on my new academy in Glens Falls. I want to make sure that the art is getting taught properly to all of my students, and at the moment I do not feel that competing and training for myself would help them. They are, and always will be, my priority.

How did you get into the sport?
I have been a big fan of martial arts for a long time because of my heroes from when I was young: the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Batman, the X-Men, Captain America, just to name a few. One day, my friend who took Tae Kwon Do invited me to his “bring a friend to class” class and I was hooked immediately. From that day I wanted nothing more than to train martial arts all the time. I would always excel in the PE units at school when it came to wrestling and then during my time in college I began working with Boxing, Karate, and Judo. Once I was able to afford training, my classmate at college told me to come train at his academy, which was New York Jiu Jitsu. I began training there and in January 2011 I went to go train and noticed the academy changed it’s name to Atlas Jiu Jitsu. That’s when I first met my instructor, Ed. I haven’t wanted to, and probably will never, train anywhere else.

What are some of the highest moments of the sport so far?
I feel the highest moments in martial arts all together is when they are recognized in the Olympics because the world gets to view these arts in their purest form with the best of the best in the world participating in them.

What is one of the lowest points of the sport?
I feel like the lowest point in the sport is the trash talk between mixed martial artists. I know that it is for publicity and they show respect after their competition, but trash talk in martial arts completely takes away from the root of the philosophy that was once taught. Whenever I think of martial arts, I think discipline, respect, and honor. I find it unfortunate that people have to use trash talk to build themselves up more often than just showing their skill and ability in the arts to speak for themselves.

Who is your biggest inspiration in life?
This is a tough one. This is kind of like potato chips to me, you can’t have just one. I would definitely have to say, my parents because even though I’m a total pain in the ass with my schedule in training, they love me and support everything I do. My brother is a huge inspiration to me because I’ve always secretly looked up to him, even though we didn’t see eye to eye much growing up. Whatever he sets his mind to, he achieves it, and now he is living his dream as a pilot in the United States Navy. Lastly, my instructor, Edward “Scissorhands” Anthony, because of his dedication to the art and for always being real with me and setting me on the right path when I seemed to stray, but mostly for never giving up on me in a time of my life when it seemed like almost everybody had. He is always there to remind me that the only way to go after hitting rock bottom is up.

Favorite fighter?
My favorite fighter is definitely Georges St-Pierre. He comes from the traditional martial arts background and has always proven himself in the octagon and all other aspects of martial arts.

Favorite fight?
My favorite fight was, and probably always will be, when I got to see my instructor compete for the first time. He had taken so much time off from competition to focus on making everyone at our academy better and always put his students before himself. It had been a few years since he competed and it was his first competition as a black belt. One day he came up to me before class started and asked if I had plans for the weekend, when I was supposed to be running a class at my new academy. He invited me to come out with him to Boston for the IBJJF Summer Open and I quickly agreed to it. It had been a while since him and I had a road trip so it was an absolute blast just being on the road again with him. The icing on the cake was watching him take home a gold medal in his first tournament back with his Edward “Scissorhands” choke. The emotion I could see running through him before, during, and after the match was easily one of the most intense things I have ever seen and felt in my entire life.

If you could fight anyone, who would it be?
As much as I may despise people for how they act and what they may say, I don’t seek fights. Fighting is for fighters. I am a martial artist. I don’t train to fight people. I train so I don’t have to fight.

What made you seek out to become a Combat Corner Rep Team Member?
I had looked at Combat Corner for a while because of what I had heard about their gear and the prices of said gear. I really liked what I heard because my current job doesn’t pay as much as I would like it to, and I’m always on the road for training. So when I found Combat Corner I was really impressed and interested in that fact that it seemed like they really looked out for martial artists, from casual practitioners to professional athletes. I have to say, since I became a part of their team, I have been very happy with their dedication to making their representatives happy.

Favorite, product from Combat Corner?
I have to say that the Combat Corner Spats are absolutely awesome. They are my first pair of grappling spats and I’m actually thinking about getting another pair, just so I can use them more often without wearing them out.

Any advice for someone who is thinking about training martial arts?
Go into the arts with the right mindset. Too many people have immediately began talking about belt promotions and winning and losing and competition records and I find that those people are the ones who don’t take training seriously enough to stay committed. Being a martial artist of any sort isn’t a hobby. It is a lifestyle. It is life.

Combat Corner Professional Gerald Meershaert III spent a little over 5 minutes in the octagon with the UFC. But spent the better part of 10 years working his way through the ranks to find himself with another win in the premiere MMA organization. With another strong finish, and despite being so young in the UFC ranks. It is obvious the long time Combat Corner Professional will mop up the lower ranked fighters in the UFC, and curious if he finds himself against a veteran or higher ranked opponent? Along with the relative little to no damage Meershaert III has taken, so long he continues to stay injury free could easily find himself on a card within a month or 2. Not a bad day for the Combat Corner Professional, and a birthday present for both his coaches Duke Roufus, and Daniel Wanderley.

Combat Corner Professional Gerald Meershaert III spent the better part of over 10+ years trying to achieve his dream of landing with a larger MMA organization. Meershaert III would find himself claiming a strong record in the sport, with wins over MMA veterans, and a slew of belts already. The Wisconsin-based fighter found himself in the fight limbo of being too big for local organizations, and too risky for another promotion to bring him in to beat their fighter. But the dream stayed strong with a win over Chase Waldon for the RFA title (which merged into the LFA), and then another quick call up for the UFC against Joe Gigliotti.

From there it was apparent the MMA veteran was head and shoulders above Gigliotti. Controlling the stand-up, the clinch, the ground, and anywhere else, garnering praise from the media in term of how smooth GM3 was. With being one of the few finishes on the card, quickly on the mic Meershaert III called out the UFC middleweight division and netted his debut UFC win and a performance of the night bonus. The relatively new talent in the UFC Meershaert III is now set to face Ryan Janes at the UFC Fight Night 105 taking place at the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. With both fighters having a debut win the UFC, they will look to continue to make a statement and put value in their stock.

Tune in this Saturday, February 19th, 2017 on the Fight Night 105 Prelim UFC Fight Pass to catch GM3’s rise in the UFC middleweight division.

Combat Corner Professional and former WSOF Featherweight Champion, Rick Glenn will find himself fighting in the octagon once again. Last time Glenn was a last minute replacement against UFC Veteran Evan Dunham, and moved up in his weight division. What occurred was a “Performance of the Night” caliber fight, and made many MMA fans eager to see what a full camp and the right weight category would produce for the Combat Corner Professional. Glenn will now find himself against Phillip Nover, who is coming off a 2 fight loss including one against former champion Renan Barao. Nover will remain to be a dangerous opponent as he will look to once again be in the win column as will Glenn, and this recipe can always lead to another “Performance of the Night”.

Tune in at UFC 208 January 11th, 2017.

Meet Combat Corner Rep Anthony who in the short time of joining, has become a great assset to the Rep Team, with his promotional of Combat Corner. Also it has been great to see his progession as an athelete since his time with the Combat Corner Rep Team. The team looks forward to his next fight in the future soon!

Who are you, and where are you from? I often ask myself that question every day “WHO ARE YOU”, and yet til this day I really dont know the answer. So when people ask me I simply reply “When I find out I will let you know”. I’m originally from upstate New York, small city called Kingston. But I am currently living in Layton, Utah.

How long have you been training, and where do you train out of? I have been training on/off for about 11 yrs now. I have trained in numerous gyms and facilities, but my current gym and coaches are Ryan Gregory for my Boxing/Stand-up, out of Cache Valley Boxing in Logan, Utah, and with Coach Juan Santa Cruz for my BJJ/Judo/MMA/Wrestling in Hyrum, Utah.

Do you have a nickname if so, what is the story behind it? My nickname is Thunder, which was given to me by my fellow brothers and sisters in the military. The reason I got the name is because during basic training when we were in warrior week I would say BOOOOM every time I hit the ground. So when I would get ready to jump or hit the ground they all would say watch out here comes thunder, so the name just stuck with me.

What is your current record/BJJ tournament results? I have not competed in any BJJ events yet, but will be in the upcoming future.

How did you get into the sport? I first started training in the art of Karate back when I was a kid growing up in New York, learning self defense. As I got more involved I began to watch movies and study the arts becoming fantasized, especially after watching “Enter the Dragon” with Bruce Lee. I wanted to know more and continue learning more everyday. So I joined a MMA gym and never stopped.

What are some of the highest moments of the sport so far? We as athletes in the sport of MMA make high moments everyday, by overcoming fear and what people say we cant’ do.

What is one of the lowest points of the sport? One of the greatest low points of the sport of MMA, is probably not having the support of family and friends as much as we as athletes would love to have.

Favorite fighter? I have many favorite fighters, for example Randy Couture, The IceMan Chuck Liddell, Frankie Edgar, Cowboy Cerrone, and for the girls Miesha Tate. But if i had to pick a favorite of all time it would be Bruce Lee.

Favorite fight? Miesha Tate against Holly Holm for sure my favorite fight. Meisha showed the world how hard work , dedication, and even the under dog can change the future.

If you could fight anyone, who would it be? My idol Bruce Lee, even though I would get my butt kicked.

What made you seek out to become a Combat Corner Rep Team Member? Loved the products, the customer service, the dedication to athletes and how they treated them, above all the biggest thing was how awesome they are all around in everything they do. No matter what your need or want, they work their butt off to find it for you. So I wanted to surround myself with positive team like them.

Favorite product from Combat Corner? My favorite product from Combat Corner so far is the Hard Work Dedication Rash guard.

Any advice for someone who is thinking about training martial arts? The biggest advice I can give someone who wants to train martial arts is we are one big family and everyone who decides to train with us is more than welcome. It might be hard in the beginning but never give up cause you will see the benefits later on even when you think you have learned nothing at all. Never Give Up !!
